I like Kurt Russell. I really do. He's been in a great deal of movies both good and bad that have been very, very enjoyable. He's underrated, versatile, a good character actor has been able to take on whatever role thrown at him. So he pains me when he acts like an obvious jackass.
The first few quotes are form entertainment weekly. Russell decided to express his thoughts on the "Escape From New York" remake and the actor chosen to replace his character, Snake Plissken, Gerade Butler:
"I will say that when I was told who was going to play Snake Plissken, my initial reaction was, 'Oh, man!' [winces] I do think that character was quintessentially one thing. And that is, American."
"People come up to me and say, 'You played Snake Plissken.' I didn't play Snake Plissken. I created him!"
When asked if he'd have a cameo in the film...well: "F--k that! I AM Snake Plissken! It's like Sean Connery always watching someone else do their version of Bond."
Then not too long after the fact this appeared on Sci-Fi Wire:
"Oh, I don't know, I was just kidding around," [Uh-huh...good save...] Russell said.
"Listen, I've had a long career, I'm only happy to have had it. Good luck to everybody, and, yeah, see if you can keep up, cool."
His smakcing of Butler was pretty low I've gotta say. Butler's a good actor and I'm sure he'd do a pretty good job of being the new Snake. But i do agree with Russell-- He IS Snake Plissken. I don't know if Connery has that big of a problem seeing how anyone can be Bond these days and "Casino Royale" was amazing. But that's a very different circumstance. Why remake a good movie? I've asked this for years with little response that doesn't have to do with money-making.
"Escape from New York" doesn't need to be remade. But I think Russell overracted, especially in regard to Butler.
Russell's next movie will be "Grindhouse", April 6.
